Hello this is the first 460 that we have owned. It has 60,000 miles on it and runs great except... Over the winter we had the Carb rebuilt since the Acc pump was leaking, Rotor, Dist cap, plug wires and plugs replaced. It starts great, idles great, runs down the road fine, Just while at idles it makes a poping sounds like small back fires, and when under a load it you let up on the gas quickly it will back fire with a loud bag. The gas milage is about the same or better then before. Has anyone had a simlar problem?
Thanks,
Keith

My guess is that you have one of two things:
1. The exhaust manifold gasket has rusted out. (I had this one on my 460 MH)
2. You have a cracked exhaust manifold.

Thanks I'll check this right away. Is this something that should be fixed before I can drive it again or is it ok to drive and fix when I get around to it?

It will run this way OK in hot weather but you need to have the windows down if you get stuck in traffic (do not idle with the windows closed).
There is also a fire hazard if you get a fuel leak or have a mouse nest near the leak. I drove mine on a vary long trip before I fixed it.
This is a big job to fix as two or three exhaust manifold bolts will break off in the head. Then you will have to pull the motor out to take the heads off so you can take them somewhere to have them removed. I had the shop do a valve job on them while they were off.
you can drive it that way, air in the exhaust will cause that like the others said.
Put Thorley tri y headers on and the problem will be solved. I love em. Easy install too.
you do not have to remove the motor to take the heads off. I have an 86 E350 motor home that i pulled the passenger side head off to get busted bolts removed.
