A popoff valve creates a 'leak' in your boost system where as a regulator limits the amount of pressure that the MAP sensor sees. ITP Diesel sells a nice regulator system but if you want to make your own system, Grainger sells the exact same regulator and bracket that ITP offers. Go with the regulator system.
I am for the regulator as well. Actually, I switched from the popoff valve to a regulator. Boost becomes more stable and consistent at higher boost levels. Plus, I'd still get an overboost code with the popoff vlave - it's inherent with it's design. I haven't had that problem at all with the regulator. Mine came from ITP.
Another vote for the regulator set-up - like the other guys said - skip the blow-off valves!! I made my own with a reg (with a gauge) from the hardware store - and used my air compressor to adjust and set it before I put it on.
another vote for the regulator. took the boost relief valve off and couldn't be happier. it's in my center console, i'll sell it to you for cheap if you want it.
Made my own regulator set up this evening for under $10 from parts at Harbor Frieght Tool Company. Once I get set right I think it will be a good set up.
