Exhaust Wheel?

is there a way to check my turbo exhaust wheel for damage? reason i ask is that my compressor wheel is in need of replacing. cheaper for me to go that way. if i can determine that there is more damage then i'll have it rebuilt with new wheels and everything for $375. just didn't want to be down for a couple a weeks. thanks

you'd have to remove the exhaust pipe, and somehow look into the outlet at that awkward angle, and the butterfly valve for the EBPV would be in the way also. only the things that come out of the engine go through the exhaust turbine. most likely the crap that was thrown from the compressor side have gotten through the intercooler. it's hard for oil to even get through the intercooler. plus there is even a very rough (3/16") screen at the inlet of each intake manifold. a good way to check if any crap has made it through the IC is to remove the compressor manifold (the 5-way thing) and check in the inside of the clamping surface part of the intake manifold and see if there is any grit there. it takes alot to mess up an exhaust wheel. most of the time it is due to bad bearings, and the exhaust wheel rubs the housing and scrapes. push the wheel in every direction while spinning it to make sure it doesn't contact the housing.

Hey strokin it: I hear tales of cracked hot side turbo's where the thing kinda implodes. Most people with this DON'T let it cool down after a hard run. Any input??

since the wheel is intergral to the shaft, you would need a whole new turbo shaft and wheel part. it's very expensive and its only done when needed. i noticed a very SMALL wobble side to side when i had finished rebuilding mine. it didn't contact the exhaust housing at all even when pushed, so we thought it was just a casting flaw. it was like that with 74500 miles with no problems and it's got like 450 miles on the new turbo so far and it's good to go. here is a picture of the exhaust wheel compared to a small ricer turbo that a kid from Collision Repair brought in
