Todays my first day participating. Just got registered. Was doing some google searching yesterday and found this sight. Used to go to dieselman but traded my 94 f250 ps with 320000k away for a new f250 5.4. I've put 450 lires thru it combined city hwy and did 14 miles per imperial gallon. After reading all the talk here yesterday I don't feel too bad. I don't want to stir up any debate about diesel vs gas engine. I will only say after driving the ps for 12 years the power torque is quite different. At this point ther is alot of nice improvements on the truck. I wish I had a lever on the floor rather than a switch on the dash for 4x4.If it works as good as pg motors (who sell more superduties than anyone in the northwest) says it does it will be nice not have to get out in the snow to turn the hubs. I'll let you know this hunting season how it works. I also used to always think I would like to have the mono beam dana 60 front axle rather than IFS. Well I got one and I'm not sure I like the ride better yet. I had 3 leaf on my last truck which rod stiff but I feel better on pot holey gravel road. The 06 has a softer ride. 2000 clicks runs great lots of (different) power. Not used to all the increased rpm to get up the hills, definately quieter in the cab.........later
Welcome aboard. Sounds like a nice truck. I also have the 5.4 w/ ESOF. You DO NOT need to lock out the hubs in order for the 4x4 to engage. It works fine without it.
However, I do still hop out and lock the hubs if I think I'm going to get into some deep snow or mud where my progress will be hindered. Also, I would have prefered to go with the shifter on the floor also, but from what I've been told, the ESOF is very reliable and not many people have had any problems with it.
So anyways, post some pics if possible and look forward to hearing from ya down the road.
We just got a new work truck and it came with the 5.4 and 4:10 rear end, it is a 4x4 supercab f250. The first day I drove it I took it back to our fleet services and said this thing is a pig no power, they told me the engines are very tight from the factory and it needs to break in. At 3000 miles I am still waiting,. At what mileage does it come to life I hear around 6000. BTW congrats on the new truck.

Don't forget it a modern high revving motor. To get the hp out of it don't be afraid to wind it up close to 5000 rpm. Just watch the gas gauge when you do.

I have 5K miles on my 06 and the thing is still a gas slurping pig. I mean when you floor it, it definitley moves, but thats not where I need the power. When plowing I want it all in the low reves. It always feels like I am beatin the **** out of this thing when merging onto highways or climbing minor inclines. I bought the superchip tune and it made it much more lively and stiffened up the shift points. My truck gets 10-11mpg no matter what I do. There is only so often that I can drive like my grandma (great lady) in everday driving. And even when being easy on her I can't get good gas mileage.

That's the problem with a short stroke motor. No low end torque. The only thing ford can do is increase the hp and torque higher up.
Consider my '96 f250 work truck gets around 9-10 mpg. That's with a 5.0 it couldn't spin a tire for the life of it. Say about 2/3 the hp and torque of my 5.4. All that and 2-3 mpg less than my 5.4.
The 5.4 engine is a good power plant, but in a super duty, with the power to weight ratio it is probably under powered. This engine moves 150's with ease, but a super duty should have at minimum of 6.8 because of the weight of the truck. I have owned two v10's and driven one with the 5.4. The 5.4 engine was pulling the same trailer that the v10''s pulled, the whole time the pedal was on the floor, not to mention 8 mpg's. My 2006 f250 v10 has been the best puller that i have used for a while. BSEG..
I have an 06 F350 dually, with the 5.4, and it runs great. The truck has a utility body, and is loaded with tools, and it still pulls hard. You just need rpms.

The 5.4 has a 4.1 inch stroke. That is not a short stroke motor. that is longer than the 300-6, the 400, the 460, etc. The 5.4 is a small bore long stroke engine.
