Well, this is my first post here....in this forum.
In my 2002 Focus I recently have been having a problem. I am sometimes listening to the FM stations and all of a sudden it will get really staticy (sp?). It will not go away (it does it on AM as well). And it is all the stations that normally come in clear.
So, I turn on a CD and forget about it. Next time I am in the car I turn on the radio. Will be ok for a bit but then the static will come back again. Sometimes I can listen to the radio for 15-20 minutes and then there is static. Or, sometimes I turn the radio on and there is static within 20 seconds.
This happens with the car running or not, makes no difference. It is a totally stock system.
The only thing that has been done recently is I unscrewed the antenna off the roof and then put it back on. But, would not think that would do anything.
So, any ideas before I start ripping into the dash?
Dude! I've been having the same problem, since Thursday. My immediate thought was solar flares but I haven't heard of anything significant on the news or tv or anything. I'm using the preouts from aftermarket HU a 4 ch amp and a mono amp for subs and get random static from the four door speakers and every once in a while, there's enough of a jolt to cause the subs to go BOOM. It does it with am/fm radio and cd and the fact that it comes through both amps precludes an amp problem. If it isn't solar flares, I think my HU is pooched.

Well I have earmuffs I use at work with AM/FM radio built into them and they seem to be working fine. That's why I think it is just my car. Also, the company work trucks (all 2004-2006 Super Dutys) are fine too.
It does it with engine off too. I replaced all the RCA cables and there's still the random snap crackle boom. The deck started skipping a lot yesterday so there's obviously something wrong with it... I knew I shouldn't have deviated from Pioneer. It is under warranty so maybe I can sell the replacement and get a pioneer.
By the way, I fixed the problem. Got another stock unit from the junk yard today. Plugged it in and the radio worked fine. It must have been the head unit.
