thought you all might like to hear about the customers vehicle that i worked on last week. 02 with 160k on it and for the last three mornings it would quit on him 3 times then be good the rest of the day. So he brought it in the middle of the day and it was running fine so i scanned it and it had a cps and 2 icp codes so i figured the cps was bad which we replaced two years ago. the hpo pressures all looked good. next day it didn't fix it so then we replaced the fuel filter cause he didn't know when it was last changed. so on the third day it still wasn't fixed so he finally was able to give the truck up so we could do some real diagnostics on it. i drove the truck and stalled three times in 100 yards like it was startving for fuel so i started testing fuel pressure (btw i hate superduties just for the fact that my 95 has a scrader valve to do this) so an hour later i removed the a/c compressor so i could get the passenger side fuel galley plug back in and removed the dip stick to do so and saw no oil!! added 4 quarts then 3 then 2 more
IT WAS 9 QUARTS LOW. filled her up with some new life juice and the guy said it was running great. imagine that.
another one i worked on last week said pulling his TT from the west. two times on the trip as the truck shifted a honking noise came from the engine compartment. he said it blew like a trumpet. and the intake spider was covered in oil from the CCV so i pretty much knew he had a intake boot leaking and it ended up being a loose clamp going intot he drivers side head.
I could work on powerstrokes all day if only the broke more.
the part i still can't figure out is why only first thing in the morning then good the rest of the day? i checked the hpop reservoir before my test drive and it was full but still stalled quickly
the first thing we do in school to customer's vehicles is to check the coolant level and oil level. document it also (in our case). that way they can't blame you if you break the engine for starting it up, driving it around and putting it in the bay with that low of an oil level. don't even start it up, check it in the parking spot out in the lot. our teacher told us a story on a guy who destroyed his engine running about 5 gallons low on oil (on an OTR truck) and tried to blame the shop for doing the damage, but he documented that the oil was 5 gallons low and he never even moved it.

The fuel filter should be changed every 15 to 20K , how can people treat a
$38K truck like that ?? I do my oil every 4K even though the manual says 5K for light duty ..
