94 E-350 Van with a 460/E40D drive train. The tranny went south on a trip and I finally had it rebuilt. Before the tranny went, everything was fine (except the tranny). I installed the Tranny, was test driving, pulled up to a store and turned the van off. When I tried to restart it was dragging. Low battery. Got it started and noticed the meter was only about 1/4 of the way (usually it is in the midle). First thought was a voltage regulator, bought one and changed it, still the same problem. Tested the alternator at a shop, said the volts were low, so I replaced the Alt/VR, same problem. Had the battery tested, it says it's good and I can charge the battery with a charger and it holds a charge. Replaced the "G" 60A fuse in the distribution box, problem remains.
Now I am completely stumped. With the van running, all the wires coming from the alternator will lite up a test lite.
Anybody have any advice to find the problem???
Thanks.

You have to test all the wires going to the alt. Make sure the big one gets to the batt positive. Measure 14.5 volts engine at idle 12.5volts fully charged battery. If you don't have a meter maybe someone else should be troubleshooting this for you...
I have 12.5 with the engine off, and 12.24 with the engine running with a slow but steady voltage drop. I also have the same reading at the big wire that connects to the ALT with the lug. I even changed the connectors to make sure they weren't causing it not to charge.
The alt isn't working at all. A small wire going to the reg goes to the key sw this has to be hot to start the alt charging. This wire energises the field. Without this wire hot you get nothing.. Do you have a separate reg or is it built in..the alt??
Regulator is piggy back and mounted to the rear of the ALT. I believe the alternator is working.....it's just the charge is not getting to the battery. While the van is running, if you put a screw driver to the back, you can feel the magnetic field. .
