According to the 83 EPA fuel mileage statistics.......all with manual 4 speed....
3.8 19 mpg 4.9 20 mpg
5.0 16 mpg
Wow that would be nice!, I find it hard to beleive the 300 got that even wheit was new in '83. I am happy when my '85 300 gets anything over half that. (4bbl. carb not helping that problem ) I think those EPA MPG ratings are sort of off though. My '05 Ranger Sticker said 24-29, It's close , average on my Ranger is 23-24, 25 on a good day, that is exceptable and is much better than driving a chevy colorado

Sorry to disappoint you, but.......I bought my 4.9 M4OD new in 83, got 20 overall. 170,000 miles later, still stock, long cab, long bed......I get 20 on highway only.
That's why I love it to death. Good space, good utility, good reliability, good mileage, and paid for in full in 1987.
rangers had started w/ the 2.8 carbed v6, then in 87, changed to the 2.9EFI. the 2.8's were better. The 3.8 is a 302, w/ 2 cyls. cut off. Not great until 88 when they switched from cfi to mpfi, or better yet the supercharged 3.8 in 89.
