in the doors, or under the seat in 6x9 boxes, or behind the seat on either side of the gas tank, or mono speaker in the dash, or aftermarket headliner with speakers in it.
Not many places to hid speakers, relocating the gas tank out to the frame helps. I hate cutting up the door panels, very few options except for the headliner. I am thinking of using smaller speakers between the seat and the floor at the front. It may not be that great for sound quality but I am running out of ideas that don`t involve cutting up my truck.
I still like the door panel placement. True, you have to butcher the panel but it's a great place for speakers and had Ford been into it at the time, that's probably where they would have placed them. Here's a couple of photos (very small sized). If you want better photos or anything, just ask.

I like that speaker replaces the tank idea, but for us long legged guys, we lose that legroom we gained after pulling the tank. Hmm,, but they do sell some thin speakers that dont take up so much depth. Might have to look into that. I have 6X9's in the doors, but still need some boom. for us old rockers that is important.
Oh I forgot all about the gas tank. My truck runs on cold fusion anyways. The box takes up roughly the same amount of space as the incab gas tank so you really don't lose much room.
Plenty of room for 6x9's between the doors but keep them a little high so the speaker frames miss the lower hinge and passengers don't kick the grills out.

I put mine in the door panels just below the wing vent. A 6 inch round and a small tweeter. It looks good and sounds good with the engine off. Why would you ever want or need to put it back to stock? The biggest problem I have, is even with all the sound deading insulation I put in the cab, the exhaust is still too loud to hear the stereo. I was thinking about one of those headliners thats got a speaker built in each corner but thats just going to make me go deaf(er).
