Mecron V is expensive where I am. Is there a substitute like Dexron xx or something that I can use in place of Mecron V for my 1997 Expedition?
TIA
No, but isn't your '97 spec'd for regular Mercon fluid? My '97 Expy is, & that's what I've always ran in it. Mercon works fine for me; the tranny seems happy at 121k miles.
If you have a 4r70w (most likely you do), you should run Mercon V in it, even if it's a '97 and came with Mercon in it. The reason for the Mercon V was to resolve shudder issues that was being caused by Mercon in the 4r70w tranny.
If you look in the right places, Mercon V is not all that expensive any more. Also pretty cheap against having to replace the tranny.
Don't bash me because I am not saying it is wrong or right but I know of two transmission shops that will use Mobil 1 Synthetic which is Mercon and add Lubeguard which claims to convert it to fully rated Mercon V
