Hi. I have a 97 Eddie Bauer Explorer. The heat and a/c don't seem to be working properly. The heat isn't very hot and the a/c isn't very cold. I read the free blend door fix thread but it sounds like I have a different problem. When I first start the car the a/c works great and is very cold. After a few seconds a clunking sound starts coming from behind the dash. Clunk, clunk, clunk..............each clunk about 2 seconds apart. It does it on both heat and a/c. It sounds like a door is opening and closing over and over. The only way the noise stops is to turn the a/c or heat off. When you turn it back on the air or heat works great for about 15-20 seconds then the clunking starts up again. Any ideas what it could be?
It sounds like one of the doors is trying to close but it won't. I suspect the door hinge is broken so it's not hanging right.
I sure hope you are wrong. It sounds as if it closes solid and then opens and closes again over and over. Will I be able to see the door when I look inside wirh a mirror?

I had the blend door problem. I have a buddy who is a Ford Mechanic with 25+ years of experience so we went the route of doing the replacement plenum. Still was having problems: AC only worked on Max AC, Vent setting always blowing hot air, etc. It turned out to be the actuator motor that moves the blend door wasn't working correctly. I'm not sure how to check it out but I know it was a pretty easy fix (compared to the doing the plenum).
By pressing & holding certain climate control buttons you can put the system into self test mode.
If the self test detects a problem, trouble codes will display on the dash readout & if the actuator that Hank mentioned is bad it will display a trouble code.

Good Luck
I had the same problem with mine. You could hear a constant clicking sound in it though. It would never end until you turned heat or air off. One of the gears in the actuator motor had stripped most of its teeth off. I guess with it not being able to move the blend door it kept trying creating the noise I was hearing. It is behind the glove box and the hardest part was getting the pin lined back up on the new 1. It has been working fine now for over a week.
