I just got a 72 F250 4x4, with the big inline 6. The body has got some rust holes, and it hasn't been driven much lately. I would like to make a daily driver out of it, but i need to put A/C in also. I don't have much mechanical ability, but don't mind giving it a try. Where does a guy start with something like this?
Well the absolute first thing to do is ensure that it is safe to take out on the road. You know, make sure the brakes are OK, all the lights work. If it has been sitting awhile change the oil and filter, air and fuel filters also. A cap, rotor, and points probably would'nt hurt either. The Carb may need a rebuild. I would concentrate on the mechanical stuff first and then worry about how good it looks.
Start by changing ALL the fluids, transmission, brakes, rear and front end, transfer case, motor, radiator. Lube all fittings and force the water out.
Make sure all the safety stuff works, seatbelts, horn, lamps. Carefullu check all the tires for defects and air pressure. Then pull the wheels off and inspect all the brake hardware. Usually you can sand paper any rust off the drums and rotors.
