dennis,

the truck is 2wd so the front can't be a D44 . From what i have been told and found on the net the 5 indicates front axle capacity.

that is why the 5 was confuseing me becuase you said it was a 2x4. could it possibly be non power steering with 3550 capacity? becuase it is definately not a high boy.

it has PS and PB. from what i can tell the front end is a 4500 lb capacity axle.

I just got my 76 manual out and it shows something different.

code 5 on a light truck means 3850 lb front axle
or
code 5 on a F/B 500-600 means 9000 lb axle

DUM

D = Knit/Vinyl Decor L/B Bench seat
U = Tan
M = Supercab styleside PU
