I have my truck in a NAPA repair shop for the exhaust manifold leak. 2002 F-250 5.4L. They just called and said the passenger side was leaking (duh) and that they were going to try and re-use the stud and just replace the manifold gasket. I thought the studs were what went bad? Can anyone tell me if having them replace the manifold gasket will fix the leak. I mentioned to him that I thought it was the studs and he said he would check into it. They quoted me $340 for parts and labor to R&R manifold and change gasket.
Studs should be ok as long as they don't break getting the nut lose. Should fix your problem. Not sure, but I thought they were bolts. Maybe wrong on that though.
I had a similar problem on a 99 5.4 in a F-250 and it cost me a lot to get it fixed, my guys kept driving it untill i drove it one day and the exhaust leak was so bad, i could barely hear to talk on the phone. Almost all the studs where broken and had to be drilled out. They where replaced with the new Stainless studs. I paid over $600 to get it fixed. Don't let something like that go to long or it will just get a lot worse.
Well I don't know how long it leaked. I can't remember if it was leaking last summer when I bought the truck or not. I know there is black soot all up the passenger side of the block. I got it back this morning. Cost me $399.92 out the door. It is much quieter. When I was using a lot of throttle at low speeds with the window down, such as backing something up.. it sounded bad!
I don't know if they used the stainless bolts or not. I know they used a ford gasket cause I can see where it has the ford logo on it.
The studs were $5.52 a piece, the nuts $1.42 a piece. Doesn't sound high enough for stainless. The bolts are a gold color. I can't imagine how hard it was to get in there to drill them out. They replaced all 8 studs. Top ones look ok to do except the one by the shock mount, the bottom ones look like a PITA! They only charged me $243 in labor. Not bad..
The replacemnt studs are copper in color, they are the updated ford parts, and they are a pain in the but, most of the time you end up removing the shock mount, if you can, on a 2wd, you cant take it off so its a real pain.
Well then they may be the ford replacements. They are a gold/copper color. I think now that you mention it they are darker than gold. Wuhoo, shouldn't have to worry about doing that repair again anytime soon.
How prone is the driverside to doing the same thing?
