I need some help on deciding to purchase an Extended Warranty for my Expedition. It now has 30,000 miles on it and one month left on the three year warranty. My wife and I are trying to decide to spend about $2,500 on the Ford Premium Care 7 year/100,000 mile warranty.
The first year I had the truck it had issues. It was a very early build date (08/2002). It had the rack/pinion replaced, the front differential rebuilt, vibration issues, etc. but has been great for the past two years.
We are buying a new home and do not want to get stuck with any large repair cost's, especially with a new mortgage.
Any thought's on how the 2003 4x4 Expedition's are holding up? I now have a month to decide on whether or not to buy one. Is there a place I can go to get a Ford Premium Care warranty, cheaper than $2,500 ? Again, any help in making a decision would be great.
I have an early build with 50,000 miles and had to fix the following:
Mirrors that didn't come back to the original position after tipping down in reverse.30,000 miles (approx)
Master cylinder 40,000 miles (approx) not covered
Driver side window motor? (not sure exactly) 40,000 miles (approx) not covered
Exhaust leak 20,000 miles (approx)
I have an 03 the only problem I've had is the passenger side rear door sensor. When it rains or durring real cold weather it doesn't read the door as being closed. Which in turn keeps the auto locks from working and the lights and passive alarm won't work either. I took it back to the dealer but they can't seem to duplicate the problem.
It's not a question of "who" has had "what" go wrong and "when" with their 2003, it's a question of what will it cost when something does go wrong with yours. If you can get 4 more years and 64K more miles of coverage for $2-2500, I say it's probably worth it.
For little stuff, like what was mentioned above, you could buy the parts and install them yourself or just live with it, if it came down to it, but for big things like a tranny or motor, you'd be stuck...
I am in the process of buying a new house myself, and I do have the 7yr/100K ESP, but my wife's Jeep just ran out of warranty and it IS a concern. She drives it very little and I keep it well-maintained, but that doesn't mean something can't go wrong. Having that warranty would give me definate peace of mind. Right now would not be a good time to have to buy a new transmission...
It's the old addage:
"It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"
If you're going to buy the Ford PremiumCare plan, contact Troy Dietrich at sweeneyford.com, they are a site sponsor and he will give you an unbeatable price, even better than some of the other sites that sell Ford warranty's. I bought a 6/100 PremiumCare plan for the wife's Taurus from Troy and he was just over $130 cheaper than fordwarranty.com, and over $350 cheaper than ford-extended-warranty.com.
I just had our 03 4x4 EB Exp in for warranty repair. 20k miles and they had to replace the clutch packs in the rear end and both auto mirror motors. Repair would have been 900 if I had to pay out of pocket. We bought the extended warranty at time of purchase on the family plan--it was a no brainer.
You could always take the 2500 and put it in a savings account and hold on to it just in case, I am a little worried on the rear end design after talking with the dealer service manager--had I not drove ours--my wife drives it daily... he said it could of been a complete rear end replacement if it was let go and it could have cost 2500 to repair.
My thoughts for what they are worth... also note we rarely tow with ours (4k or less in weight) and my wife drives concervatively...
note what I meant is, my wife didn't notice the dragging or shutter in the rear end--I drove it and noticed it right away... I only drive it once in a while...
