Last week I purchased a pair of '71's. A F100 and F250 Camper special. The cab on the 250 is pretty well eaten up on the floor boards but the f100 has a really nice cab on it. I don't see any obvious differences in the cabs between the 2 so am assuming they are interchangable? ( please correct me if I'm wrong). I want to keep the 250 running and bought the F100 ( minus engine) strictly as a cheap source of parts. I was just wondering how big a project I was looking at to change it out, ie will it mean pulling the engine, total rewire, etc. Any tips comments etc are greatly apreciated.
If they are both automatic or both standard they are pretty much a direct swap, otherwise you have to do some floor pan work. The electrical should be the same, depending on what rewiring has been done in the previous years.
The engine can stay in place as can the tranny. You will need a method of lifting the cabs, couple of 2x 4's and some friends or a hoist. Remove the seat, interior gas tank and the doors to lighten the load so to speak. Remove the front fenders and hood. Disconnect the steering column, the master cylinder, the speedo cable and mark and disconnect the wiring in the engine compartement and then the cab mount nuts. Lift slowly making sure everything is disconnected from the cab, ie fuel, brake lines, wiring etc. May be a good idea to practice by removing the donor first, or at least disconnecting and lifting it
I probably forgot some things but I am sure you will see them as you go. It is a good weekends work, maybe even throw in a Mon and Tues night too About a 7-8 on a 1 to 10 scale, IMHO.
