All I have is the stock tank inside the cab. How many gallons does this tank hold? Also, when I fill the tank up, my gas gauge only comes up half way. How hard is that to fix?

Ive run mine dry before and put just a little over 19 gallons in it. If you fill it too much and it gets hot outside you have to park it with the pass side downhill or it pukes out the cap. I have an owners manual at home that would probably tell me the factory capacity.

Sorry abou that I didn't read the rest of the post. First you have to see if your gage is bad or the sending unit. Pull the sending unit out and check to make sure the float doesn't have a hole in it first. If that's OK then ground the wire that was grounded to the tank(leaving the hot wire hooked to the sending unit). Now with the key on move the sending unit from the bottom "E" to the top of it's travel "F". If your gage reponds and then gets all the way to full you can sometimes bend the float wire a little to get the results you want. If it doesn't change then ground the Hot wire direct to a ground(it's better if you choose a ground away from the fuel tank) Your gage should go from either empty to full or full to empty(Ican't remember) but this will tell you that your gage is working properly, then your problem is in the sending unit. Most of the time the sending unit will be the problem. If the gage shows bad check your wiring and the printed circuit board on the back of the dash before buying a new gage.

What is the size of the gas tank on a 1971 F250?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Sep-02 AT 06:40 PM (EST)]Guess what...Before I read your post, I parked it on a hill with the driver side facing downhill. I had filled the tank on my way to work. When I went to lunch, there was a security guard and two cronies spreading oil-dry on the spot where the gas dripped. The security guard was inside the truck looking for something with my name on it. Since it still has a 14 day drive-out tag on it, there was no liscence plate on the back. They told me that they had already called the towing company and were going to have it towed...without even notifying anyone. I work for Dell...we all have computers...they could have emailed everyone to let the owner know that it was leaking gas. I can understand having a car towed if it is leaking gas, but not from the gas door...maybe from a fuel line or the engine. Anyway, I parked it with the driver door uphill. Should be fine now.

Get used to it. I never fill up my tanks unless I'm gonna burn off a few gallons right away. It happens to the aux. tank too, makes a big mess on the side of the bed. Gotta love these trucks!

My favorite is when you fill it to the brim and go to get on the high way those on ramps are a bugger. Looked out my side mirror once and thought I had lost the whole tank it was coming out so quickly. I probably only lost a Gallon at most, but it made me slowdown on them on ramps.

Yeah there goes the gas mileage!

BTW Ford says the tank holds 18.5 gallons for '71. Used to hold 19.5 gallons before the evap. crap.
