This question will make a lot more sense if you have used a OBD-1 code reader...
I recently purchased a OBD-1 code reader #3145 as pictured below. . .
and after reading the entire manual the night before I was gonna give it a shoot just to see what it spits out (check engine light is NOT on).
I was going to read codes from the 1st of 3 system test needed to get a complete and accurate reading of code(s), the KOEO (Key On Engine Off) test.
I started up the bronco and ran it to normal operating temp just as described in the manual and then shut off the truck and took the keys out.
I pluged in the code reader and turned on the Broncos ingition to the point that the fuel pump turned on for a second and the vent control was accesable ENGINE STILL OFF i then turned on the code reader and it displayed the default 000, and pushed and released the test/hold button, to where the KOEO test is suppost to begin and display the a tringale stating the unit is linked, and a blinking square tell me its receiveing codes
-INstead all the bronco did was turn on the fuel pump for the same few second duration it always does when you turn on the ingition no relays clicking and code reader still showed the same 000 as if I just turned it on.
I tryed this multiple times and followed the troubleshooting instructions where you make your own ground, only to then have the fuel pump go for the few seconds by itself 1 time.
I am lost
is it possible that I have the EEC-V computer (I don't have mass air), or am I doing something wrong?
ALSO if it makes any diffrence. Whenever you turn ONLY the ingition on, the check enging light comes on naturally (like on many vehicles) until the engine is started. But when I would try the KOEO test and only the fuel pump would go on, that would turn off my check engine light. And when I followed the troubleshooting tips to make my own ground, that would make my check engine light blink twice every 4 seconds or so. incase that helps my situation.
hope this makes as much sense as I wasnt sure how to describe it

for fords... heh i never use the code readers i have an easier time doing it the old fashioned weay by grounding out terminals 1 and 2 on the test connections and using an anaog voltometer or watching the check engine light

There is no way grounding the ecu test connector and counting CEL flashes could be easier than plugging in a code reader and reading the numbers right off the display and what numbers are stored in its memory. The reader is also much more accurate....it eliminates the chance of making a mistake with the flash count.
that all depends if youre the type that has trouble with ford code readers its alot harder (used to use an old 1 button star tester) but the codes never came up properly so i still ended up watching the flashing light
I have that reader too and its great for me. I did note some of the terminals where it plugs into the computer were a bit loose and didn't make a good contact so you might want to check they don't dissapear into the body of the device when you plug it in. I took mine apart and super glued the back of the brass pins to stop them retracting.
Other than that its flawless. Best $34 I've ever spent...
