4wd not engaging

I have a 1996 EB. The 4x4 light comes on in the dash, but the front tires are not engaging. When I press the 4 low button (in neutral) you can hear a clunk sound, it feels like the 4 low is working. Should it make a sound when I press the 4 hi button? (either engage or disengaging). What can I do to check the 4 hi is working?

If you read any of the posts about auto hubs, everyone says to change to manual. I did last week and it made a huge difference. No more problems

when you go into 4lo are you definatly in the lower gears? if so then i suspect that the tcase is fine but your auto hubs are shot. and going manual warn premiums is the only way to go

It feels like i'm in 4 Lo. 4 lo makes a 'clank' noise when engaged and the truck has the low gear feel to it when you let off the gas pedal. Still not sure if the front tires are pulling though.

an easy way to check if your hubs are working is crawl under your truck and turn one of the driveshafts 1-5 times if it doesn't lock then your hubs are bad. new auto hubs from ford are about $380 each side. like everyone esle will tell you switch to manual hubs. for a 96 you will need to buy new hubs like these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT
plus you need to get the spindle nut conversion kit like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT
you will also need a 2 1/2" rounded socket like this

this socket will take the stock spindle nut off then you will need a castle type socket to install the new spindle nut
check here for some good write ups on changing these out
