I've got a 2004 F350 psd with 140K that I use in the oilfield.(exd. warr 150K). I've had zero problems with the motor. Two guys I know with same truck have had injector and head gasket issues (one chipped, one not). The maintenance costs seem extremely high if any problems encountered since the engine is such a tight fit.
It appears most people have low milage on their trucks and I have not seen any over 200k. How many of you guys plan to keep you trucks past warrenty?
I've had a service tech tell me a water pump replacement is $3000 cdn which I presume will not last more than 300k. With the huge expense of parts and long labour hours do to poor fit engineering is anyone else scared out there?
My truck was $55K cdn new (with extra warranty) and last week appraised at $23K. I still owe $33K. I have to keep it another 2 years to make it pay(240k approx) any suggestions?
I feel your pain, I have an 04 with 40k on it and not a problem one "kncok on wood" local dealer called with the Ford loyal onwer rebate and tried to get me to trade! Would have done it but only going to give me 29k for mine and I too owe 36k. So my payments would have been over 750 dollars and no way in h e double hockey pucks am I going to pay that. So looks like will keep mine and hope it goes the 140k. Good luck But if can trade up
Yeh, I'm paying $1000 cdn/mth but my problem is I put too much miles on in too little time (200-250 km's/day). I went with Ford because I think they have the toughest powertrain in my application. In 140K i've had minor powertrain problems (two front driveshafts, rear brake pads and one tie rod end, stock rancho's are on their way out also.) I can easily do powertrain repairs myself off warrenty but the engine scares me. I installed a positive air shutoff system when new and I was suprised how long it took to take the air cleaner system off (and this is probably one of the more simpler tasks).
I have an 04 psd and if I trade it in using the owner loyalty discount, would I have to pay sale tax on the entire new price of the new truck $40K or just sales tax on the difference between my trade in and the new truck. like 12 k taxable?
I plan on keeping my truck well past warranty lapse.
I kept the last two trucks I bought used for nine or so years each. My 04' F250 SC/LWB/4x4/FX4/ZF6 I expect to have for at least that time. It's just past 30,000 miles now. Not high mileage like what you're doing. Not driven hard. It's my daily commuter and family vacation/tow rig. Stock with a Bullydog exhaust swap. The Ford owner loyalty discount is inviting, but it's not good timing for me to basically extend a contract for what I already have. I bought my truck at a fair price with 0% financing from Ford. That's tough to beat. So I do plan on keeping my rig until the contract is paid in full. I expect the rig to have at least 150,000 miles on it by then. (60 month term) Quite possibly more. With routine maintenance I also expect 300,000+ miles out of this truck if I do keep it for the nine or so years.
If this were my work truck in a rough service environment, then preventive maintenance could possibly be an obsession for me. The amount of faults resulting from daily use, compared to the maintenance performed would be the factors that would help me determine whether I'd keep the truck after the warranty had ended.

Dieselhound: Not sure about your state, but I paid sales tax on the difference between my trade and negotiated sales price of the new truck. That made me a happy camper.
Blacksmoker: Tough decision. Sounds like you got a good truck and that further complicates the decision. However, being that you're upside down regarding what you owe, I'd say keep it and stay on top of your routine maintenance. Just keep in mind that your truck will appraise even lower in two years from now so that gap may or may not change much from what it is now. Just wanted to give you some food for thought.

Thanks, that sounds right. I would hate to pay 7.75% tax on the full 40 grand. The new registration/license would be a bad enough hit. It runs about $450 per year around the left coast.
I haven't heard of this ford loyalty offering at all. Either it's only offered in the USA and not in Canada or I'm out of the loop. Well I still got 10K km's left to decide my fate (warrenty runs off) which equals about a month and a half. I wish ford engineering made the front of the truck longer like the old 97 shape with a hood similar to a big freightliner where you could pull it forward and walk right into the wheel wells, but I could go on dreaming about a lot of things that won't happen. Thanks for your replies.
There currently is NO!!!! loyalty program for those of us in canada who wish to dump their troublesome trucks... Up here we are suppossed to eat the loss on the finances.
Since this is a F>M.C. owned?/supported web site we cannot talk about the pending legal actions to correct this fact ( we have no lemon laws ).
If You think your truck is prone to, or will give you the expected grief, dump it while it`s still got some sort of warranty on it. We dumped 2 out of the three we had and count ourselves lucky to do that with out eating too much. My daily driver which has 11k on it, list @ 61900 cdn, is my current concern. I am in the same situation as yourself. 9 months old, and the best cash offer/either outright or on trade was 33.400 on saturday, and that came from a wholesaler. local ford dealer will not take it on trade as they can`t give these things away here, and the dodge dealer in london stated outright that he will just wholesale it as the warranty and reliability issues associated with the s/d line makes them too hard of a re-sale item on their lot. kinda wanted to trade this unit, for a new f350, but....... what taking a near $ 30.000.00 hit in 9 months kinda speaks for itself.

FYI: FTE is in no way associated with Ford Motor Company or it's subsidiaries. Your accusation(?) is completely unfounded.
The fact(?) that Canada has no consumer protection laws is of no consequence to... or fault of... FTE.
It is my understanding of the FTE guidelines that you can seek help / advise but, certainly not anything to do with Class Action or other types of group associated legal action.
In any case, it would seem incumbent upon you to seek local legal advise in an attempt to discover what legal authority could possibly prevail in this regard. Surely, Canada has some sort of relief for product issues.
Blacksmoker I live in Alberta as well and I bought an 04 f350 from Lacomb ford and traded it in at another dealership for an 05. I recently received a voucher for $2500 for a purchase towards an 06 or 07 superduty. BTW Ford of canada also gave me $2200 while my 04 was having problems then another $5000 when I finally had enough and got an 05.
I wonder if a flag comes up when you buy an 05, or when your 03-04 comes in too many times for repair. And wow, $7200 bucks, that would just about take care of my depreciation. I'm going to have to shake my local dealership upside down and get my hands on some of fords pocket change. Thanks for that.
