hi all im new here. Any ways, i have been looking for a powerstroke for a few months now and have found one but i have a question. It is a 2000 F-350 lariat with 115k. Straight cab, long box, auto. they are asking $13,900 for it, but it comes witha 9ft. western plow. I was wondering if i should run away from this truck because it was used to plow? what should i look for if i go test drive it, as far a damage because of the plow. THanks for the help.
When you first start the truck (make sure it's cold - first start for the day), look for any smoke in the exhaust. A little puff of blue or white smoke is ok. If it continues, it could have a glow plug problem (white smoke), or some injectors leaking oil (blue smoke). Also, once it is up to temperature, pull the dipstick out of the transmission and smell it. If it smells really burned, the transmission may have some issues. Transmission damage would be what I would watch out for on this one.
plows are very hard on trucks. with only 115k miles on it i would think he could get a lot more money for it which would tell me there might be something wrong with it. also with a plow he probably lived where there was salt on the roads so just watch out for rust. i live where there is a lot of snow and cars get rusted out all the time. just stuff to watch out for. that does sound like a good price though especially if you could talk him down a little
thanks for the help guys. i called on the truck and a woman owns it. i didnt get to actually talk to her just her voice mail but i will keep in mind what you have told me. also another question if i took my buddies edge evolution with me and monitered the trans temp could that help me, or if the trans is already messed will it heat up like normal and not get overly warm?
I don't know how it monitors trans temp, but my guess is it would need a sensor put into the trans. Probably not something they'll let you do. I doubt they would let you dig under the hood to go hooking stuff up either. But, it's worth a shot. The worst that can happen is they tell you no.

the auto enginutiy can also measure trans temp. there is a sensor hooked to the computer inside the tranny. i dont know where it is though. but my guage and the a.e are within 10 degres of each other but i thought the edge only measures trans temp on the 6.0 and not on the 7.3?
no the evolution will measure tranny temp on a 7.3 and it is pretty accurtate compared to his analog guage. also, you plug it into the plug on the bottom of dash panels near your feet so i can do it non-chalantly.
I would not be scared of it at all, sounds like a really fair price (as long as it is not beat up bad of course). I had a plow on my 92 Ford diesel. They are not hard on trucks unless you do commercial plowing with it, which I did not. I put over 200,000 miles on my truck, using the plow to do my driveway and the occasional neighbor driveway and parking lot at work. In fact, let me know if you want to sell the plow, or even the brackets on the truck. But I would not be worried about it, I just bought a 01 Powerstroke that had a plow on it before I bought it, best truck I ever had. (But now I have the Powerstroke mod syndrome)
