I was wondering if anybody could tell me what would be a good transmission for my 1969 Ford pickup. It has an FE 360, with the old 4-speed with the granny gearin it. I'm looking to make a street pickup out of it. please help!
You may want to check into using a SROD four speed from an 80's model van. They look like the old 3 speeds but are 4 speeds with overdrive. I believe they have a regular gear split instead of a granny. Someone here surely has done this swap. It looks like it should be close to a bolt in provided the mounting to your bellhousing is the same, or can bolt up to an FE 3 speed pattern. From what I hear they are strong, but don't expect them to shift like a toploader.
new process np-435 seems to have more streetable
gears than the reguler stump puller np-435,
I have never had any other trans, but both
are still quite low geared. or one could
adapt a 6-speed from a super duty...
those are some good gears for just about
anything.
Aaron,
I agree with the Toploader comment. I converted my 68 F100
(360 3 speed) to a Toploader, and just pulled the T19 (4 speed
with unsynchronized granny gear) from my 1972 F100 (and put
in a Toploader). The Toploader is a 4 speed, "car" transmission
produced by Ford during the 1960s and early 1970s. They
are legendary for their strength, but also a little pricey
(I've seen them selling for between $300 and $500).
Check out the following webpages for a bunch of useful info
on Toploaders.

how to buy a used Toploader].
http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/ [has a page w/ tag numbers...
very helpful in knowing what you're buying]

dealt w/ Dan Williams in the past. This guy knows EVERYTHING
about Toploaders].
A Toploader should slide right in behind your 360. You may have
to buy a new clutch disk, depending on the size and spline-count
of your tranny input shaft (Toploaders have two sizes of input
shaft). Besides that, the trans bolts up w/ ease. The only two
big things to deal with are that the Toploader will probably be
longer than your current trans (get your driveshaft shortened),
and the shifter will (probably) come out somewhere else in the
cab (probably further back. May bump into bench seat). Everything
else bolted up in both instances (speedo cable, crossmember etc.).
It's a good swap to make. Well worth the effort.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I have another question is there a place where I can get a used toploader. Also where a good place to get the drive shaft shortened at.
Dan Williams mentioned above has them rebuilt. You might check the Mustang forums and parts suppliers, maybe ebay. A driveshaft shop can do the driveshaft, should not cost too much.
