So the up side to bigwobbely's thoughts are that perhaps shissgbob should buy used and find a real deal. With the difference he saves, he likely will not care about gas prices for a while.
... just a thought.
PS: I am hearing that gas will be $3.50 this summer and will likely hit $4.00 in some parts of the country.
NO WAY would I go with the 4.2 V6! I drove my moms f-150 with the 4.6 V8 I didnt even like that either so when I bought my F-150 there was no issue the 5.4 V8 was the ONLY way to go. If I ever need to pull anything with anykind of weight I got the power. Ford should leave the V6 for the ranger; build a V8 version of the ranger and call it the thunder now that would be cool...
not really familiar with the newer v-6 but My '01 5 speed handled herself fine even with a 3.5 lift and oversized tires, but it pales in comparison to my '05, 5.4 supercrew... go with the v8
You know, I have often wondered if the the 4.6 V8 has that many advantages, if any, over the 4.2 V6 ? I mean the 400 cc difference, is only about 24 cubic inches, not a whole lot. A big V6 can be a pretty torquey engine, not too far from a small V8.
Short of testing them in identical weight, size , geared trucks, it would be pretty hard to know the final answer with this question.
I have a buddy with a F150, 4WD, 4.6 and another buddy with a CV, 4.6 and I'm not overly impressed power wise with either one of them, as far as V8 power goes.
I've often wondered if the 5.4 V8 in the F150 consumes significantly more gas than the 4.6? If it doesn't, than with the extra power of the 5.4 , IMO, would be the way to go.
No I've got a 2005 5.4L my moms got a 2004 4.6L and I can't tell the difference in the mileage if any thing the 5.4L gets better mileage cause it doesnt work as hard. I get about 500 miles to a tank and usually put in 28 gal. Do the math it works out to be about 17.8 miles to the gallon in the city. I haven't been on a long trip yet to get highway. DUDE GO WITH THE 5.4L
I am a former Ford Auto Dealer Service Manager and I am not usually a big fan of V6's. With that said I bought a 05 F150 Ext cab V6 AT after road testing it and was very pleased with the performance. After the road test I didn't notice it was a V6 until I popped the hood. I just towed a dual axle trailer amounting to about a 3500lb. load and was pleased with it's performance. I have no complaints whatsoever.
i have the V6... for me its fine as rite now i dont haul... if anything i will be pulling a small boat... an atv or maybe a sled.... i also drive the highway 5 days a week and the V6 is good on fuel (i guess? lol) as much as i would have liked a V8... i went witht he V6 and it still has ***** and i couldnt say no to the price...... when i hop on it... it pulls.... well pulls better than my old stang
I would suggest looking for an XLT with the "Tow and Go" package. That will get you the bigger V-8, plus tow package along with a savings. AZDesert said it best in the above post. However, if you do not want to spend as much I'm sure the 6 cyl will get you where you want to go. I had plenty of F150's and a F250 with the old 300 inline six and they always got me to my destination, they just did not have much power. Good Luck!
My brother has a new Dodge Hemi and it can haul all of the testosterone he can put in it and the best mileage he has gotten is 10 hwy. I ain't complaining about my 16-18MPG. I pull up to my coffee shop drive through and the little hottie barrista comments on how she likes my Harley emblems and my rally stripes. You know what they say... "It's not the size of the tool, but how you use it."

The old inline six's had plenty of torque but sucked on horsepower. Reliable as hell. Don't confuse the old inline six characteristics with the V6. This V6 winds out like a good small V8 IMHO.
