Question Seat options

The seat in my 65 looks ok but after about an hour in the seat your back starts getting sore.
If I were to have the seat rebuilt would it help. These old seats seem to be mainly springs with a small amount of padding. My wife has a very bad back and can not ride in my truck for more than about a half hour.

I have been thinling of getting a modern seat from a junk yard and installing it.

Any suggestions?

Jd

JD, I have a seat from a 76 in my 66. That seat is wider than the 66, so if your truck has arm rests you have to have both doors open to flip the back, or risk ruining the arm rest like I did. A seat newer than 79 will have to be mounted on your existing rails, and it has been posted regularly that seats through 96 will fit.

hope this helps

John

jd- John is right on, but I'll add some info I wrote down from an earlier thread.

'65 to' 72 have same seat brackets, '68 and up have a wider bottom seat cushion.

I was told '73 thru '96 will bolt in using your old seat brackets, little different than John's post, but????

'97 and newer will fit the space, but need to fabricate all new brackets to match your mounting holes.

Someone some time ago put an '01 seat system in with built-in shoulder belts, but I think that is a 40/60 split seat.

I need to do the same change to my '66 soon, my seat is shot!

Putt, You may know brakes better than me, but not seats. The floor pans and bolt holes are identicle from 65 to 79 with 4" added to the rear of the pan in 73.

A 79 seat will unbolt from the floor and bolt up directly to a 65 with no changes needed.

Don't mean to question more knowledgeable member's expertice, but installed 86 seats in 65 F100, in my cass, found it was not a direct swap. Been some years ago, memory not what it use to be, but seem to recall the replacement seat setting too low. Now that subject has come up, wonder if because truck has a 4 speed with the high hump. Anyhow, remedied by taking the contoured padding from bottom section of 86 and placing in the bottom frame of the 68-73, which has same tracks as 65 but wider. Then attached 86 back section to the the 68 seat. Removed the short headrest part of the 86 back so seat would set level with the rear window. Thought would add my $.02.

Thanks gentlemen I will keep my eyes open at the local Pic-N-Pull.
I love driving this old truck but could do without the back ache.

Thanks

I got a split bench from a 78 t-bird, with a little bit of modification it fits my 66 great and it rides real nice. The only problem is I have to build a console to fill the gap in the middle.

I just replaced the original seat in my 66. I went to the local U-Pull yard and after searching through about a dozen 1980's Fords with rotten, torn up seats, I found one that had already been removed, and was sitting in the bed of a truck. It's red like my truck, but I don't have a clue what year it's from (it's not from the truck it was sitting in). My guess is late 70's to mid-80's and it's in near mint condition, with only a few pinholes.

It's a direct bolt up to the stock 66 rails, except that the new seat was riveted to the rails, while the 66 was bolted. Once I drilled out the rivets, the holes matched up perfectly, but I did have to grind off part of the latch that locks the seat back in place, as it was bumping the behind the seat gas tank. It really looks nice, and is much more comfortable than the original. There's a little less room between me and the steering wheel, so I can't gain any weight, but all in all, it was well worth the $26 I paid for the seat.

jd_sylvia,

Like Putt stated, I put a 60/40 split bench with build in shoulder belts from a 01 F150 in my '64. I had to make all new mounting brackets but it was well worth the time. You can pick up a 60/40 split bench on e bay for around 150-200. Here is a set I just found 8056660350, this I for both the front and the rear, but you shouldn't have any problem finding just the front.
