What trannie fluid would be great for my wifes, Ex.. Its a 98 5 Lt AWD, that takes Mercon 5, mileage is 187,000ks. One trannie shop told me to use standard mercon and not 5? One other told me DexTron? Now I'm confused? It take 5 but the trannie shops will put in standard 3? Any pts?
Always use Mercon 5. Don't take it back to the shop that said standard Mercon. And NEVER take it back to the place that said Dextron.
Mercon V is made to a higher standard than previous mercons. It will be able to get hotter without breaking down. Since 96, it's been the standard for ford.
Also, a way to think about this: what if in a year you check your fluid and it's low... So you check your owners manual and it says your car takes Mercon V... So you top it off with that, however the shop you took it to used Dextron. I'm not sure what would happen if you mix the two, but are you willing to take that chance?
The two shops are well known, trannie shops. I also phoned around and most say you can use mercon3/dextron. I will be using mercon5, but is there any better then buying it at 10$ a lt. Here in Canada, Canadian Tire sells Mercon 5 in QS brand and It's own. Both at 8$ a lt.
Forget the cost.
Check your bible.....the owners manual.
It specifically calls for Mercon 5 (Better known as Mercon V).
It is a semi-synthetic.....good stuff.
