Diesel/V10

If you had a choice bet Diesel f-250 4x2 or a f-350 V10 4x4, what would you choose/why?
I am considering two trucks, roughly same price, will put 3000lb (loaded) camper and pull 5000lb boat. f-250 has camper pkg, f-350 does not.

Tough choice. Either one can do the job your asking with no problems. One of the considerations I'd take into account is the frequency your going to ask it to carry and tow, and what the trucks going to be doing the rest of the time. I'm assuming the diesel is a 6.0. If the majority of it's life will be spent as a daily driver making short trips, go with the V-10. The 6.0 doesn't like short trips. And like gashog (glad you got your screen name back) said, the V-10's a 4x4 and launching/recovering a boat is much better with one.

Both trucks are 2006, will be using as daily driver, 30 mi round trip for most part. Plan to have truck for many years, will put probably 14-15k mi/year. Longest road trips 2000 miles round trip maybe 2X/yr, then mostly 700 mi round trips a few weekends out of year, then mostly local mtns. Might make extended road trips with camper. Tough choice.

14 to 15 k a year,,trips,,camper,,I would go diesel, I went from a 04' V-10 to a 06', PSD and picked up 4 mpg now not towing,,V-10 , 6-speed 4:30, DRW,was great, never a problem, towed good, but never calculated any better mpg, then 11.6, my 2nd to last tank on the 06' PSD was 14.67 mpg, my area, right wear I live, got some good big hills, and the way I usually go to work,,hills I hit, the 3 Superduty's I have had are in my gallery, 06' is full of tools in the cap,,so was the V-10, good luck with your choice.

Now my 04' was 8' bed that gets you a 38 gallon tank, around here I was down to 1/4 tank by 300 miles or less,,,, now my 06' PSD is the short bed (6.3/4'), that nets you 29 gallon tank, 300 miles or so,,at 1/4 tank again,,I did get 405 miles, best tank so far, with going on 5 k miles on it already, picked 06' up on 1/6/06.

With my experience I think your location, makes a difference, with what mpg you get,,,rather flat land area,,better mpg's,,,hills in your area,,,a little less mpg,,,,so whats your driving area like ?????

Easy choice.

V-10 hands down. Just think of all the gas you can buy for the $5000 diesel option and $1400 tranny upgrade. Not to mention the quietness, smoothness, clean smelling, and instant response to the go peddle the V-10 delivers.

I own 3 PSDs but if you are going to only put 15K a year on it I would go with the V10!! Diesels are great but you have to look at the Economics. The gasser will do the job and you would have to take the extra cost for the Smoker!! Now if you were going to put over 30K a year the smoker would be the only choice!!

Grodyman said in the original post that both truck were roughly the same price.

The v10 4x4 would be $500 more to purchase truck, would be cheaper, but they put a power slide moonroof on it........without ordering, perfect truck not out there. If I go v10, may buy junker to commute with. Opinions seem to be mixed. Still undecided, want diesel, but also like 350/4x4.

Isn't really that much difference in the 250 / 350, except for the fact that the diesel is a 2WD and the V10 is a 4WD. Go with the diesel. Why do you need 4WD in sunny southern Calif?

The V10 is worth it for the added reliability. With the PSD you never know what you're getting. Could be great but might be a nightmare.

With the later V10s (2001 and up) you can sleep at night soundly knowing your engine isn't going to puke out when you need it most.

Plus I'd never own a 2wd pickup. I use the 4wd too much in the winter and for working offroad on my land and on hunting trips. A 2wd would be useless for my needs. Plus a 4wd sits alot higher off the ground and just looks better in my opinion!

Also the V10 is a 350, right? So you're going to gain a little bit or weight capacity on the GVWR over the 250 which is a nice factor as well.
