I would not of ever thought there could be a problem with mulch, but here it goes. After putting over a hundred bags of mulch down, I started looking for something cheaper to put down in my out lying areas. I was warned there is bulk mulch coming out of hurricane damaged Mississippi and Lousiana that has Formosa termites in it. I'm not totally familiar with this termite, but understand there is no termite poison to stop it.
From a quick check, it seems to be a major problem down there, they even have a website set up about their efforts to get rid of them and the damage they do.

Where did you check? I never noticed any problem. Gee whiz, gotta love the stuff that goes around when one area is concentrated on for too long.
I have never seen anything live through a chipper and I have sent lots of bugs to their death. Even when cutting up a diseased tree into 12" long pieces, it is enough to disrupt the colony and kill it in short order. Plus, once you take a colony or individual insects and put them in a new area, they pretty much become food for established ant nests in that area.
