I'm changing the transmission in my truck, and am going back with a 4speed. I have two at my disposal: A 1970 New Process, and a 1975 Borg Warner T-18. My question is, which is better? Reliablilty, strenght, gearing?
I sure like the iron top of the T18 over the aluminum 435 case with those pins that wobble even from brand new. Tag on a eye and safety wire the cap on the T18, a simple cure as well use anti seize on the thread. Even with a little 414 you can break a 435 as well bearings failing under hot rodding street conditions. On a 435 use a 11 ball instead of 7 ball on the 308L bearing, it will live longer and not become loose which pulls away from the imput bearing hence end clearance problems as well synchro clearance. A total stupid design to support a shaft with taper bearing on one end against a ball bearing at the other.

Regarding to what comments I posted?
I have done machine work to the 435 cases for proper cluster end clearance, longer interlock pins in the shifter top, stronger reverse spring to prevent mad speed shifting 3 to 4 without going onto reverse, rebeveled dog points, on and on. With over 900K hard miles with a 435 i've encountered a few weak points. If I were to convert from auto to stick today I would get a TKO 600 in a heart beat vs a T-18 or 435 then have a real 4 speed plus OD. That 435 is only rated at 327 ft/lbs torque. Long finger with blocks added, 4,800 rpm launches mean almost instant hook up then the torque numbers go to app 1,400 ft/lbs, not what Mr. 435 can handle.

Both those trannies are bull low 1st gear with normal driving like a 3 speed right? Is there a truck 4 speed with 4 usable gears and the shifter on the top...how about the T-19 isn't there a close ratio version.
