Hello, I have a 1990 f350 4X4 that the front seal went out on the trans. I had the trans pulled and the seal replaced. Now if the truck sits overnight when you first put it in gear it is like its in neutral. You have to let it run for about 30 seconds in gear then it goes into gear and its fine all day. there is no slipping at all. It does still leak a little fluid fron the front seal, about a dimes worth over night. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Your truck is a 1990. That usually means a lot of miles. Has your tranny got lots of miles and has it ever been rebuilt? If it is old and never rebuilt could be the tranny getting old or some of the valves getting sticky etc.
Did it have this delay before the seal was replaced? Did the problem start right after the seal? If it started after the seal, then I would guess the shop goofed or something. Maybe they damaged the pump drive while installing or maybe the shift linkage is adjusted wrong?
If it was happening before the replacement I would guess that the tranny was getting old and tired and was overheating which can burn the seals or force fluid past them.
I am NOT a tranny expert but have blow up a few and read a lot on this site and others.
Thanks for the reply's. my trans was rebuilt about a year ago, but only about 10k miles have been put on it since. Before the seal the trans was perfect. after it moves it is also perfect all day, with no slippage.
Sounds like the converter is draining back. Check the fluid level in the morning and then again after it has been run a while. Don't check it running, just at rest with the engine off. If it is significantly higher cold the converter is draining back.
Did you rebuild or did a shop. I would think 1 year and 10K miles would be under warranty. I think the last two trannies I had rebuilt had a 3y 12K mile warranty.
Again, not a tranny expert, but maybe there is some leakage in the tranny. I would suspect the valve body. Perhaps the valves are sticking or not properly sealed. I DO NOT know, but if there were O rings on the valves maybe one was damaged during install. Or sometimes the valve body screws will work loose and allow leakage. I always check these screws whenever I change the fluid. About 1 out of 3 or 4 times I will find a couple screws loose. Not a lot but definitely a screw or two that are not even finger tight.
Also I assume a new filter was installed. Sometimes guys will damage the O ring in the socket where the filter plugs in(assuming you have an E4OD or similar). This can cause the pump to not pickup as quickly as it should.
Good Luck and hope someone who really knows speaks up.
your TC is draining back. it might be a check ball in the valve body im not to familier with that tranny so i cant really tell whats the cause of the drain back but thats your problem. you TC needs fluid in it to turn the turbine and thats what turns you input shaft go to the tranny shop and tell them they fu*ked up.
