I have what looks to me (ha, ha) to be a drop in plastic bed liner. The sides go under the rails and its formed to fit over the wheel wells and it has a lip that sits on top of the front edge, nearest the cab window.
I didn't see it get installed.
I want it out!
Can someone please tell me the techniques to do this?!
I'm not sure how your bedliner is held in place; your best bet is to just look carefully to see what fastens it down.
On my truck (a '97 Stepside) there are two cleats on each side of the bed, each held down by two Torx screws. I'm reasonably certain that once those screws come out and the cleats are removed, I can just pull the liner out.
If your truck also has some sort of caps along the tops of the side rails, they may need to be removed to get it out, and if there is a matching cover on the tailgate, it would be fastened down with a couple of screws.
There are no caps on top of the side rails. I'll go and inspect for screws.
I don't remember seeing any, but I would expect them to be there.
QUESTION #2....
I want to cut off the lip that sits on top of the front edge by the cab because I have a truck cap to install, but when the cap is on the truck... the front lip makes it raise up a little too much and it doesn't lay flat.
Any ideas on how to cut this edge off? With what tool? ect?
Thanks everyone!
If you take a pry bar and try to get the bed out from under the rails you...
1. cut your husbands finger when it snaps out very quickly from where it was stuck.
2. Dents the inside of the rails, not very pretty.
If your husband who is way more creative, remembers what one of you said here and lifts up the center of the bed, it makes the rail/sides sink down and with brute strength you can get that baby out!!!
#2. To cut the liner...
Stand the bed with the front edge with the lip on the ground, with a 2 x 4 board underneath it, get your friend/wife/husband/dog to stand inside the bed on top of that front side that has the lip to steady it against the 2x4. Then with a circular saw, very slowly cut the lip off. Yay!!!!
Then you have to sand down the rough edges and "Ta-Daaaaa"
Done!
I'd recommend getting the liner out before you cut the front lip off. But if you don't feel like going through that hassle, a cut off wheel will work. Just be careful not to get into the metal in behind it.
As for getting it out, you have to lift up the middle by the tail gate, then pull the sides out from under the rails, and pull inwards like a u shape. Have someone help pull the front lip over the front of the bed, then slide it out.
And yes, it is a pain in the rear. I'm leaving mine in until I get around to a Rhino liner.
Just a side note, another easy way to remove the front lip is to use a utility knife with a sharp blade. Score the lip on the inside corner right below the cap a few times, bend it over and snap it off. If it's cold out you can use a heat gun/propane torch(being careful not to stay in one area too long and melt it.) A good trick with heating plastic with a torch is to start from left to right and make broad strokes all the way across. Don't go back and forth, but just left to right lifting the flame away and repeating.
