Old blue (67 F100, 240-6 , 3 on column) has recently started giving trouble. The shifter will jump out of first and can't get it into any other gear. Kill engine, move linkage underhood to put trans in neutral and it will work for an indeterminate amount of time.
I suspect the linkage and not the trans but am very unfamiliar with the mystery that is three on the tree. Dad says there is some bushings in the column that are probably worn out.
I can't find any reference to them in any of my Ford catalogs.
Anyone? I really don't want to hack a hole in the floor and stick a floor shift in there...
Yes, there are bushings, and a spring, I think within the column that can be replaced, I think one of the major parts suppliers that is known to this site will have them, also there are bushings on each end of the shift rods that can be had need be from any Mustang parts supplier, as they are the same, don't give up on your 3 on the tree, they are much cooler than just hacking a hole in your floor and installing a floor shifter!
If this happens again before you get it fixed, with a aid of something like a claw hammer hook the linkage closest to the fire wall and pull it up. That should free it up. Pull the shifter as close to the steering wheel as possiable when going into and out of 1st gear.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
try putting a little lube on the shift arms at the bottom of the column, if they get dry they will stick and drag on each other causing everything to hang up.
i also had that trouble with mine sometimes. put your shifter in neutral and look at those levers under the hood. they should be lined up even with each other. if not, adjust them by the linkage on the tranny and make them even. this will help that
I did a complete rebuild with parts from Dennis Carpenter. There are thrust washers (nylon) 3 of them. I also changed the bearings, one at the top toward the steering wheel and another at the bottom. The total cost was about 20 or 30 bux. I removed the column and worked on the bench. It was easy, and I learned how the whole thing worked. Go for it, good luck. Billemc
