I have a '79 E250 with a Holly model 4180 4bbl. The engine runs fine in park but bogs down in gear. It is not the timeing. The engine seems to run smoother with the choke fully closed. I had both floats adjusted. I don't know what else to do.
Check the output of the fuel pump. It sounds like you either have a bad pump, or filter. You said it runs better with the choke closed, which means it;s running way lean. Check for vacuum leaks at the intake too. Which engine do you have?
Thank you for the reply. It is a 460. Here is everything I know:
Fuel supply to the carb is okay. The plugs completely fouled before putting 1000 miles on them, but I was having timing problems , that is straightened out now.
I have used almost 10 gallons of gas in the last two days just playing with the carb. I took off the front and rear bowls and adjusted the floats. No help.
I honestly don't know anything about the carb.
When I give it gas in gear it sounds like it is just sucking air but at the same time you can smell it flooding out.
As far as the vacuum hoses, I have no idea where they go. I have a Chilton's manual but can't understand it. I cannot afford to take the thing to a mechanic and even if I could, I can't drive it there.
