i have a 6.9liter diesel. what would cause this problem? if you gradually move the accelarator on the ip the rpms gradually raise slow but when you get to a certain spot the rpms shoot up fast? its like its real sluggish on the low rpms and then all of a sudden it regains power as you move the throttle to a certain point. thanks for any help jarrett.
Wanna tell us what year it is and how old the IP is. When was the last fuel filter change. What is the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve....... do a search in my posts for Pressure and flow test.
plc7.3 sorry about lack of info. its a 1985 f350, couldnt tell you how old the ip is ive only owned the truck for about a month now. im sure its probbly never been changed seeing nothing else has been. previous owner just drove it ,thats it. never checked fuel pressure just know the fuel pump is working because it shoots diesel out of the schrader valve. the fuel filter was changed as soon as i bought it and that was a month ago. and ive only drove it maybe three times because i cant afford $40.00 a day in fuel. horrable fuel mileage. thanks for any help to fix this thing or im going to sell it and buy me a boat. haha
Put you truck info in a signature go up to quick links and edit one...........
In the older trucks the governor flex ring was known to disintegrate and black chunks would block the IP check valve under the 90* fitting on the IP cover. The timing is also changed as the throttle is moved and the flex ring is part of the changing mechanism.
You could connect a flexible line to the 90* fitting and route the return fluid to a white margerine container, if there are any black specs in the fuel you should consider a new IP. Along with the IP if the injectors were never changed they and the return lines would be wise also. Post back with some results.....
well thanks for the reply plc7.3, but looks like that boat is more promising. ive done spent enough money on that truck, ill just sell and latter on get me that new dulley that i always wanted. haha
plc7.3 i was just wondering that flex ring under the 90* fitting is it something i could fix myself ? i do all my mechanic work. i just tore down the transmission and splitter and rebuilt them my self. i am a jack of all asses and master of none.
nope all things aside its a good truck, just the previos owner neglected it and let things go down hill on it and the only thing now is time and money to get it back right again. problem is i have the time not the money in the prosses of buying a house. how many pounds of pressure is the schrader valve supposed to have? and i took the 90* fitting out and there was no black pieces of rubber coming out of it . another dumb question is on top of the ip there is two electrical plugs i know one is for the fuel cut off what is the other one for? is it electrical timing?
The front one is the fuel shut off solenoid.
The rear one is the cold timing advance solenoid.
The timing advance and the fast idle are on a coolant temp switch near the thermostat, both work at the same time.
5 to 7 PSI at the schrader valve cranking with the fuel shut off solenoid unplugged.
You should also be able to get 1/3 pint of fuel in 10 seconds of cranking at the same place.
If maintence is not kept up, catching it up can get expensive.
