I have a 1994 5.8 liter winsor with low miles. I am running 31.5 tire, edlebrock exhast, mass air intake system and a throttle body spacer.
I am averaging 11.5 miles to the gallon and most of that is city.
I was under the inpression I could get an average of 13mpl.
Any thoughts on the matter?
Did you recalibrate your speedo for the larger tires? If not, your mileage will read lower than it actually is. Also, larger, heavier tires will impact your mileage.
Even so, the Bronco weighs close to 5k. 11.5 in the city with a 351 is not that far out of line. If you want to get the best mileage, tune it up, keep it aligned, and keep your foot out of it.
yeah, check out the fuel filter and seafoam it, 11.5 isnt bad at all though, air pressure, theres all kind of factors there, i would highly suggest a tranny fluid and filter if you have an e40d as well
I can get 4 mpg better if I take it really easy when I drive, but if I drive normal, I get 10 mpg.
Take all extra weight off, keep tires aired up, fresh oil, and accelerate slow(that can give you 2 mpg change in that alone over just normal accleration).
Definitely go easy on the acceleration, as the others have said. I went from 8mpg to over 13 when I quit drivin like the other idiots here and when they give me pissed off looks, I don't really care. They don't pay to fill my tank.
Yea I put 9m spark plug wires and high voltage coil as well
and tried the soft foot. Im just gonna have to live with it.Never owned anything smaller then a 350 V8 and never will.
ok guys, now I'm jealous. I get between 6 and 7 MPG
At least be comforted in knowing that that isn't normal, so you can only go up.
Be sure to do a complete tuneup, change all your fluids (especially in the transmission and differentials if they've never been done!), cap, rotor, spark plugs, etc. Check your alignment (tires pointing different directions is a LOT of drag, not to mention money into new tires), check for sticking brakes, seized E-Brake, etc.
it's an '87 with the 5.8 I have plugs & wires, just not enought warmth to get my fingers to work outdoors. Fluids will also have to wait for a nicer day as well as the cap & rotor. I do however have new tires with less than 2K miles on them. (31's x 10.5) so I'm not exactly going overboard there. It still belches fire on occasion, and was wondering if a set of headers would help or hurt in that Dept.
I've been anxiously awaiting a gas mileage report on that project! Awesome.
I was hoping to average about 25 with it, but I can tell you, I find it impossible to drive the truck "Nicely".. It's like trying to drive my Mustang "Nicely". I keep telling myself to go easy on the throttle to get better mileage, but everytime I'm behind the wheel, bam! the pedal hits the floor. HUH!
260hp, 700tq, how could you not want to? I'd do the same thing!
However, with those numbers, AND 35" tires, in a 78 (which I think are around 6000 lbs), 20mpg is a dream come true. I want a 4BT like nothing else. Only engine I'd trade the 300 for.
Beermonger, what do you mean by "belching fire"? That just doesn't sound healthy no matter how you look at it.
