I contacted "Ranch Hand" about pricing on a rear bumper for an '05-'06 F250. To my surprise they do not manufacture them for the newest year models. So my question is this. Do most people who purchase aftermarket rear bumpers do it for cosmetic reasons, or is it because the vehicle will sustain less damage from being rear-ended? The stock bumper looks pretty flimsy and weak! But then again, would you rather thbe bumper absorb some energy instead of transferring it all to the frame. I really value everyones opinion here on this great messageboard....thanks in advance.
That's funny... I've got a "Cowboy" 8-inch drop rear bumper from Ranch Hand installed on my 2005 F350. I suggest finding another Ranch Hand dealer - unfortunately, though they build a good product, their salespeople are generally not worth a damn.
I went with the 8-inch drop to retain my factory receiver hitch, in which I keep my solid (not hollow, like most are these days) 6" drop ball mount with a 2-5/16 ball installed. The ball generally does a good job of hanging up on crossmembers, etc., preventing another vehicle from getting too far into your truck. The hitch/ball is also good for protecting you from backing into short walls, etc.
Oh, and I went with a replacement rear bumper for several reasons - cosmetics (it matches my front end replacement), a slightly bigger step, and the collision issues.
We had a girl in an old honda rear end my daughter while driving my 03 stock SD. The hitch took 95% of the blow. Broke the bumper brackets, but the body shop was able to re-use the same bumper. The girl in the honda was going about 40 and the truck was stopped at a light. If I would have had the ball on the end of the hitch, maybe no damage at all, who knows. ...and the girl in the honda, she got a ride to the hospital code 3 and the car was junked.
I'll keep my stock bumper, thank you.

All OEM rear bumpers are the same...from 99-06. No changes...they all bolt up. I just installed a "take-off" OEM rear bumper from an '05. My original OEM bumper had seen better days.
