68 ranger
I HAVE A 68 F100 RANGER I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT IF ANYONE KNOWS. I BOUGHT IT FROM MY GREAT GRANDFATHER BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO ASK THESE QUESTIONS BEFORE HE DIED. I THINK HE BOUGHT IT NEW. IT IS A 360 2 BARREL CARB WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE SOME TYPE OF HYFIRE IGNITION BOX ON THE FENDER. IT LOOKS ORIGINAL. WAS THAT A RANGER OPTION? IT ALSO HAS WHAT LOOKS LIKE MONROE SHOCKS WITH THE HELPER SPRINGS ? WAS THAT A RANGER OPTION? IT ALSO HAD WHAT LOOKS LIKE DEALER INSTALLED AIR CONDITIONING. WAS THAT A RANGER OPTION ? ITS A GREAT TRUCK THAT PULLS LIKE A OX AND HAS THE LOOKS OF A BAYWATCH BABE. I WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING. I LAUGH WHEN I'M PULLING A HILL WITH A LOAD AND PASS UP THESE $40,000 WANNABE TRUCKS.
1.WAS 68 THE FIRST YEAR OF THE RANGER? WHAT WAS?
2.WHAT WERE THE OPTIONS THE RANGER CAME WITH IN 68?
A little etiquette tip -- turn off the caps. They are hard to read, and on the 'net, caps indicate SHOUTING. For those reasons, they are considered rude.
The 360 is probably original. It was the most common V8 in '68 light duty Fords. If the 4th character on the VIN is a Y, it came with a 360 (your first 4 characters should be F10Y).
The Hyfire or similar box is a later add-on. All 360s came with a dual-point distributor and no external box.
Helper springs were available as an option, so they may original. Not sure about the shocks, but it would be extremely unusual to find a 34 year old truck with original shocks. 20-40,000 miles is usually about all they last, depending on how the truck is used and where it is driven.
Dealer-installed A/C was also available in '68, so it may be original, too. Factory A/C was available at least as early as '69, and may have been available in '68.
The Ranger package was basically just a trim package. There were three levels of trim: base, Custom Cab and Ranger. The Rangers came with fake wood appliques on the dash and door panels, bright aluminum grilles (also included on the Custom Cab -- the base models had painted steel grilles), and bright aluminum rocker and side mouldings (the Custom Cab had the side mouldings but not the rocker mouldings). There are more minor differences, but those are the obvious ones.
No mechanical upgrades were included with the Ranger package -- you had to order those separately. As the Ranger was more expensive than the base or Custom Cab, however, you generally find more mechanical upgrades on the Rangers than you do on the other models.
Does your truck have any other engine mods, besides the ignition. My original 360 2V is a dog loaded down going up hills. On flat ground it does pretty though. Sounds like your truck shreds though, w/ the looks of a baywatch babe and passes new trucks.
