Got my 51 pickup started today after setting for many years. Both water pumps leak like a spigot. Just wondered if anyone has any experience with the new water pumps from Speedway Motors.
They're supposed to be good. When I needed one (road trip emergency) Speedway couldn't find one.
Same quality pump is available at your local NAPA store. I usually order mine from Sacramento Vintage Ford - that road trip problem? SVF shipped one overnite air to the motel where I was stuck.
Before you spring for new ones, a couple of questions;
I take it they were either not leaking while sitting, or was the engine laid up dry? It's possible the seals have crud on them that might clear out from some running. If it was laid up dry, then the rubber in the seals is undoubtedly bad.
What pressure rating is your radiator cap? Should be a 4 lb cap; if you are running 7, or heavens forbid a 12, they will geyser.
Thanks for responding. I know i'll need new water pumps. Water leaks out almost as fast as i can put it in. I'm still amazed over getting that old flathead started. It doesn't sound bad either. I'm going to try to remove the old pumps tomorrow and hope the bolt in the hose fitting cooperates. Then i'll check out the vendors that you folks recommended. I'll definately go with new pumps instead of rebuilt. Not a lot of differance in price. Starting to get exited again over the old truck.
