I had the tranny temps in the yellow mark on the stock gauge(02psd). I was coming back from camping and decided to take the short cut over the mountain very steep pull for about 5-6 miles on gravel put the tranny in 2nd from a stop sign with a 8500lb fifth wheel and went for it about 25mph 2500rpm wasnt paying attention to the tranny temp I was watching the pyro sit @1150. Almost to the top I noticed the tranny gauge up in the yellow and backed way out to a stop and the gauge just sat there. A couple min. later there was a trucdk behind me so I pulled it into first because I didnt want to brake the tites loose, started climbing and the tranny temps just dropped to where there supposed to be. Did I hurt my tranny??????

Hard to say with that OEM guage...pretty inaccurate.U might want to add the Trucool 4739 tranny cooler for towing...just $115...cheap insurance for expensive tranny's. Adding syn ATF will help too since it's a better thermal conductor.

Like Nut said - that stock gauge is pretty useless! I had my trans temp up to 215* on a heavy tow once - and my stock gauge was still dead center - it never moved. Also a buddy of mine totally fried his tranny trying to back a big camper up a hill - and he said his gauge was just barely in the yellow!!
I think I would do a full Trans fluid and filter change, get yourself a real trans temp gauge, and definitely an aftermarket cooler!!
If you select 2, you are actually starting out in 2nd and running on slippage until upto speed, you are probably fine as long as the o/d light wasn't flashing. I would highly recommend a cooler as well, along with next time, start out in 1st, it will be a lot easier on the trans and t/c. If you are concerened with tran longevity, do a shift kit as well, also, i recently rebuilt mine, 101K on the clock, only found one clutch disc slightly discolored, rest were in fair-good shape. Replaced all anyway, point is, I could have gotten away with just replacing the stock T/C with a good aftermarket one. if you do a lot of heavy towing, then you might consider replacing the T/C an option as well.
i gotta chime in on this one... the new company i am working for runs a few F350s and a couple of F450s... one of the F350s with a 7.3 and a 4R100 auto is on it's 5th tranny...! somebody finally wised up and put a REAL tranny temp gauge in all the F350s because the stock gauge is complete JUNK..!!! if i were you, i would have a COMPLETE fluid flush and drain done... torque converter included... and a filter change... get some mobil 1 synthetic in that tranny... and put the biggest low pressure drop tranny cooler on your mule that you can find.... if you really want that tranny to shift right... get a shift kit into it also... that will help reduce slippage between shifts and that reduces the heat those shifts generate.... or better yet, you could just replace that tranny with a new monster box tranny that is built for towing and add a big tranny cooler and you'll never have to worry about it again...!
Johnny....did u hear?...Mobil 1 syn ATF changed it's formula to a dual Mercon/Mercon V rating. Not approvedin our tranny's....i recommend these folks
for tranny fluid: http://www.specialtyformulations.com/products.htm
Go with the Autoglide.

You could get big points with your new boss by showing him the infinate wisdom of FTE and the resulting PMS... .... or maybe not.

It will cost you for fluid, but for now I would go ahead and atleast change out the fluid! Not a fix, but it will keep from doing more damage until you pull the cover to do any Mods.
Speaking of PMS, there is a T/C lockup mod where you install a switch to lock the converter in any gear. That's where the heat came from, the converter.

the owner of the company has an F350 that's all jacked up and tricked out... he already has PMS... but then he has MS with everything he has..!!! i don't think ANY of his many vehicles is still stock...!!!

UHH: I'm old school. What color was the tranny fluid/ and or did it smell like burning toast? bright pink, no toast smell, the tranny probably will live through the event.
