My 98 4x4 xlt expy (no air susp) has developed a lound squeek/creak somewhere. Its hard to pinpoint where its coming from. It does NOT make the noise when im turning the wheel, it just happens when the suspenion is being worked. Its really loud when I go over speed bumps. I don't see any obvious problems like a hanging swaybar link or anything broken.
During my vast search of this forum I found people having problems with a creeky trans crossmember. Soon after I bought the truck I was getting a poping sound upon acceleration from a stop. It turned out to be the 2 nuts that bolt the trans mount to the cross member were backed out over a 1/4". From the corrosion I could tell it had been like that for awhile. I dont see it being that since it doesnt happen when I turn the wheel (which is one of the syptoms of the creaking crossmember).
I didn't see any grease fittings so that kinda stinks.
If anyone has some insight, please let me know.
I could bring my vid camera along for a ride if someone thinks they could better diagnose it from actual audio of it.
im with you.... my suspension also squeaks whenever i go over speedbumps. will a simple wd-40 do the job guys? or am i looking forward to replacing the system?
The rear of mine (with air susp.) squeaks pretty loudly over any kind of bump. I haven't had a chance yet to find out exactly what is causing it, but I guessing its a bushing in one of the trailing arms.
Mine creaks too, but not if it's raining. That leads me to believe the noise either comes from a dry rubber bushing or from the coil spring seat. I'm going to give everything a good dose of Seafoam Deep Creep spray, & see if that takes care of the creaks.

I was also thinking it might be the coil spring isolators. I also noticed it isnt so bad when you first start driving. perhaps the heat effects it somehow.
Well I started narrowing things down. Its not the sway bar bushings frame or endlink.
I stabbed all the balljoint and tie rod end boots with a grease gun with a needle tip. The pitman arm does have a fitting on it but I couldnt get the gun down to it. Since it squeaks over speed bumps I doubt its my problem.
I disconnected the sway bar end links so I could lay under the truck and push up on the frame in an effort to locate the squeak. I could definitely hear it, but I can't pinpoint it.
My next step will be to find some spray lube and hit the A arm bushings and whatever else I see.
My wife drive the truck daily and she said it could have been squeaking for awhile since she has the radio on and the kid is making noise in the back seat.
A day or 3 before I noticed the squeak she had run the truck through one of those drive through car washes with the under body spray.
I'm assuming that the water washed out the lube somewhere.
How would someone find out if they have air suspension or not? Do all expeditions equipped with the on/off switch on the inside near passenger seat at knee level have this option or can cars have the switch installed and no air suspension?

Don't know about the switch, but the quickest/easiest way to tell is stick your head under the rear end. If there's springs on the rear axle, you don't have air suspension. If there are airbags where the springs should be, then you have air suspension.
I also have the squeaking while going over speed bumps, and is also quiet in rainy weather. I have 92K on my 2002 xlt. If you have no "Chk Susp" light come on your dash at initial key-on, and if you are missing the "Air Susp" on/off switch behind the front passenger's kick panel, and if you do have coil springs in the rear you do not have air ride suspension.
