I just had a Detroit TrueTrac put in my stock 9.75 rear differential (99 F150 4x4)...sweet. TrueTracs have always performed well for me in Wranglers. Does anyone know of any problems or concerns with putting a TrueTrac in the stock 8.8 front differentials of the 1997-2003 F150s?
this is a good place for it! we talk about lockers and axle setups very often. However i will not be able to help you as i know nothing about the True Tracs and even less about the newer F150's!
Because the 8.8 front axle on the 99 F150 4x4 (exact same truck i have) works with a Center Axle Disconnect system, a True-Trac will cause your front drive shaft to spin all the time, which MAY cause premature wear or a little extra noise when you driving down the highway. It might affect gas mileage just by a hair since its just one more thing that spins when your driving. However it seems that many people dont seem to mind this and have had no problems.
How about an E-locker like the one Kubota is using? If you want max traction, go with a selectable locker. It has to be selectable for this type of front axle.
Thank you very very much. I assume the Auburn ECTED http://www.auburngear.com/ featured in the April edition of Off-Road Adventures would operate in the same fashion as you described for the TrueTrac. If so, a selectable locker like the Eaton E-locker will be my choice. Thanks again.
