Is it possible to do this without a special mounting adapter? I would like to put one onto my p/u, as I now have 4.11s in the rear. I think ford was putting the AODs on the 351m trucks, am I correct with this?
I'm not sure which trans you're talking about but I have an AOD in my 79 behind a 351C.The trans is out of an 86 Cougar and bolted in using the FMX flywheel that was on my 351.
An AOD or AODE would need an adapter plate unless you happen to have one of the rare FMX blocks. I think he means E4OD. The 385 series bolt pattern is the same as the 351M/400.
"The E4OD light-truck transmission was introduced in 1989 as Ford's first fully electronic transmission. While slow to gain acceptance at first, many improvements throughout the years have yielded a strong and reliable transmission. The large size of the E4OD makes it difficult to fit into regular passenger cars, limiting it mostly to truck or big-block swaps. The E4OD is the only automatic overdrive transmission that will mate with Ford big block (385-series) engines."
It seems some identification is in order. Is the transmission an AOD or an E4OD? Is the engine a 351C or a 351W or a 351M? What year truck is the engine in and is it original? What year vehicle is the transmission from and what engine it was behind. In order to make suggestions accurate information is needed.
Transmission identification information can be found in the transmission forum.
Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.
