Its all in the timing...

It's been a long time since I was here last, but my problem remains the same. I'm still trying to get my 88 FSB going. Anyway...

If you rotate the balancer around to 0 degress and remove the cap and wires should the rotor be pointing toward number 1? When I did this the rotor was pointing at me instead of number 1. I have heard that it is possible to put the balancer on 180 out and wonder if this could be my problem.

Please help the wife wants to sell it...

Don't know for certain about the balancer but its very possible to install the distributor 180 degrees out. Have you had the balancer off the engine?

With the balancer at the "0" mark for the timing, the rotor should be pointed directly at the #1 plug wire position. That is correct.

Has the distributor been out?

Make sure when you rotate the crank to TDC that you are on the compression stroke. You can do this by pulling the valve cover so you can see the rockers arms.
Turn the crank in the normal direction, watch the rockers cycle and after the intake valve closes, the next time the mark reaches TDC will be the compression stroke. Now look at the distributor rotor to see where it points. If it's not at #1, the dist will need to be pulled up and adjusted.

Another way to make sure you are on TDC of the compression stroke is to put you finger over the spark plug hole as you turn the engine by hand. You will feel the pressure as the piston comes up on the compression stroke.

I myself have not had the distributor out, however it is used and there's no telling what was done prior to my purchase. While looking at the rocker arms from the driver side fender which is intake and which is exhaust? It's been along time since I've messed with it.

The arms are sort of in line with the manifolds so you can see where the intake points toward the rocker.

Put the crankshaft dampner @ Zero. The rotor should point to #1 plug terminal

on the distributor cap. Exhaust valves are always on the end of the head.

Good luck.

I knew this rang a bell...

Has this thing ran since you bought it? If yes, and the distributor hasn't beed removed, then it's installed correctly. Don't worry about it being 180 degrees out.

Do you have a timing light? Do you still have a high idle and a vacuum leak?

timing and such

Is your fuel pressure good? Pressure regulator good? Both of mine went. When truck sat for 15 min it would barley start and miss like crazy. Low pressure from pump. Mechanic that replaced pump checked pressure after putting in new pump and it was thru the roof and the regulator was bad, he said it would of flooded the engine if he had not replaced it.. Just food for thought
