Holley or Edelbrock?

I have a '78 F250 4x4 with the 400\4 speed that is used for general hauling and it sees a fair amount of highway miles. Currently has a Holley 4 barrel on an Edelbrock intake. The old Holley leaks and needs adjustment often and I want to replace the carb. Summit has an Edelbrock 600 cfm\electric choke for about $260, Advance has the Holley 600 cfm\electric choke on sale this month for the same price. Which would you choose?

well i have had both and i like my edelbrock cause it is easier to tune and take care of even though that there are less options available for it

This is the only Holley carb I've ever run and it was on the truck when I bought it so I don't know if these are typical issues. The other thing is I have to pump the gas after shutting off the truck on restarts leading me to believe gas is leaking out.
I am running an Edelbrock #1406 on another car and haven't had any problems out of it yet which is why I threw that brand out there.

My friend has a Edelbrock carb on his 71 Chevy 4x4 w/ 383 stroker and it's fresh outa the factory, still has to pump it to start. Just the way some vehicles are depending on age and other things. Most old trucks you have to pump. If it was leaking gas, you would see it and probaly smell it. Just my 2 cents worth.

i hate both of them for a street driven vehicle

im partial to a q-jet, cheap, very economical, you cant overcarb an engine with one due to the secondary air valve, capable of 750 or 800 cfm

im wasting my time, but ive run a few holleys and a few edelbrocks

I'd love to run a quadrajet. Is there such a thing as a square bore quadrajet or would I have to run a carb spacer\adapter? Or maybe even swap out the intake? My gut feeling would be that the quadrajet would get the best mpg.

Put an Edelbrock 1406 on it and forget it, no leaks, easy adjust, and will start and run right out of the box if you follow instructions. For a street engine you can't beat it. If the choke is set right you don't have to pump a carb unless it has a huge cam or is totally out of tune. The only thing you have to do is move the throttle linkage to set the choke. There are spreadbore adapters out there but all they do is complicate things.

I was leaning towards the bolt on and go aspect of the Edel. but would consider the quadrajet if it was feasible. The other advantage would be not needing to switch intakes.

Thanks.

The Edel. also has the secondary air valve, so it'll open as needed just like a Qjet. I've ran Weber, Holley, Edelbrock, and a Qjet. They all have good & bad points, but I'd go with Edelbrock. Yes, it's quite street friendly when tuned correctly.

The Edelbrock intake is a square bore setup. The 1406 will bolt right on. Make sure you get the plate to go under it tho. I forget the part number but the parts guy should be able to find it. The Edelbrock manifold has a wimpy carb mounting surface that requires a plate on it.

In my experiance a person is either a Holley man or an Edelbrock man. Just by one of each and wich ever one works for you the best is the kind you should run. If I touch a holley they break, but I have had great luck with my Edelbrock. I have a friend who is just the opposite, he can only get holleys to work for him. Just my 2cents.

P.S. if its just for and off-road vehicle and not built much over stock I would advise a motorcraft 2150, they are simple, get great mileage if tuned right, and work awesome off-road.

The quadrajet has had it's own problems. One that comes to mind is the leaky main jet well plug issue. But it's easily overcome with epoxy.
