I've been running holley 1850's for 20 years. I refresh them every couple years, and never had an issue. I have one Edlebroke on a stock mid 80's 460 that has given me a couple minor problems, but otherwise has ran well. I have a 750 Edlebroke on a built '71 429 that is the biggest POS I have ever seen. I have an Edlebroke intake on a 400 that had yellow spots all over it 2 day's after installing it, and I hadn't even started the motor yet! Personally I have not had good luck with Edlebroke and am not impressed at all with their products. BTW, unless my trucks have sat for more than 3 days, they start with a touch of the key, no matter what carb, or how many miles on the motors. All but one truck is '70's models.
so my friend just got a holly intake manifold for his 351m in a 79 f150 and he is wondering what carb to get. He is more concerned about milage than performance but is trying to replace the smog laden caliphonia 2bbl with a decent 4bbl.
I put an edelbrock 1406 (electric choke) on my 77 460/c6 motorhome. Not one single problem - starts up every time. Very easy to tune, even for a novice.
if that 351m is stock, just find an older non emmisions 2bbl and throw it on there, especially if he uses it off road, the simplicty and the angle capability is hard to beat
There doesn't seem to be a real consensus but the opinions appear to lean towards the Edelbrock. Hadn't really considered the Holley Truck Avenger carbs mainly because of price but maybe there is a 570 cfm that won't break the bank.
i have had the edelbrock carb and had nothing but trouble with them, now running a holley street avenger on my 1980 f 150 with a 351 windsor and works great
