in my 92 150 2wd the input shaft bearing is going out as well as syncros in 3 and 4 trying to find another trans for direct replacement i would like to put a zf in it but it is about 4 inches shorter than my m5od so i would have to get different driveshaft carrier bearing and maybye a different clutch not sure on that one i got a m5r2 out of a 89 thunderbird my dad said it wont fit but we were planning on gutting both trannies and using the insides out of the m5r2 and putting it in the m5od with new bearings, syncros, etc. but not sure if it would work or not
I was under the impression that the ZF is exactly the same length. Are you sure it's shorter?
The "M5OD" is not an official name. The box in your F-150 is an M5R2. The Ranger got an M5R1, the t-bird had an M5R2. It may actually fit but if not parts should be interchangeable.
my dad ran all the numbers on the trans in the truck and on the other trans the one in the truck came up as a m5od and the other one came up as a m5r2 out of thunderbird. that is what the numbers say but i dont know except what he told me but we measured the zf it is exactly 28 inches and the trans in the truck and the m5r2 are both 33 inches
The actual length of the trannies are different, but the confusing part is that on a 4wd version, the length from the bellhousing surface to the tailshaft on the transfer case (where the driveshaft would go in) is the same between a ZF and an M5OD (M5R2). On the 2wd models, it's probably different. The crossmember mounting position is the same on the 4wd stuff, I am not sure about the 2wd stuff. You may have the same crossmember position and can mount it in that same place (measure). Then all you'd need is the right driveshaft (possibly made for you).
