Another CPS thread
Howdy all...I heard this chriping sound real loud one morning before going to work so I took my wife's car. When I got home, I turned on my truck and the chirping was there but softer. I used my mechanics sthetoscope to find the root of the chirping and found that it lead to the CPS. One thing I noticed; I was taping it with the end piece of the scope and then I pushed it outwards, like removing it, when I did, the sound got louder. When I let go and let it rest, it went down again? I read on another forum that maybe the magnet or the metal piece fell off causing that noise. I couldn't check mine because one, it was un-reachable and two, it was already dark. Next week when I get paid, I am going to replace the lower intake gasket on my truck and when I remove it, it will expose the CPS, and thats when I will check it.
Due to the fact that the CPS runs at $72.98 and the Sincronize assembly at $146-196 at my local ford dealer, has anybody gotten away with a quick fix or something? I have read a lot of other threads and people say that maybe the wiring is dirty, others say just to grease it, others say that the magnet fell.... I am willing to try those fixes but the other threads were for other engines, not 4.0 like mine.
Hopefully the vane isn't destroyed and you can get away with replacing just the sensor. Otherwise, the CMP synchronizer shaft will have to be replaced as well.
P.S. Welcome to FTE.
The bearing got hot and scorched... probably due to lack of lubrication because of age, hence the chirping noise.
When you put pressure on it you "flexed" it just a tad which put more pressure on the bearing.
You're going to have to replace the whole assembly. Sorry.
