Maybe a little better than OZ, but it depends. Gold miners in Nevada are taking home $70,000 to $80,000US per annum, but if you are willing to work in Alaska add about $30,000 to that. They fly-in, fly-out up there too. Some underground miners were making almost that much at the Homestake gold mine in South Dakota, but that's about the high end (mine is shut down now anyway).
I interviewed for the Windimurra vanadium project near Mt. Magent in WA in '98, but the fly-in, fly-out setup didn't appeal to me. Plus, I didn't see many Ford trucks there or in Perth. Is that what you do - 2 weeks on , 1 week off? I'm doing OP phosphate mining now.
Yeah mate 2 on 1 off at the moment, I work many different rosters depending on the site. Our best development miners make up to $180000. Mining tradesmen make from $80000 up to $130000. Most wages are good even the residential jobs, many people don't like the fly in fly out jobs so prefer to live close to work(like me). Ive thought about coming to the US or Canada for a change of scenery but every job Ive looked into have been a lot lower paid than out here. I'm in a gold mine atm but I'm just a floater, move where I'm needed, I'll be out of here next week.
Other than Alaska and Nevada, not many new projects here in US. Canada has some new diamond mines in development near Yellowknife, as well as some even higher north. Based on what I read, there's way more new mines going in Australia than North America. All other activity is in Latin America and Oceania. You couldn't pay me enough to go to Russia or New Guinea.
Lots of new mines opening in Australia but we're really short of skilled labour, however that is good for us already in the industry as it pushes the wages higher, the big companies are starting to bring in immigrant workers to fill the holes but most of them are worse than useless. We get a few Canadians out here but not many Americans.
If the political tensions cool down in PNG I'll be looking at going but only if the money is substantially better than here.
What is your job, development miner?
Chemical engineer, mainly in processing of phosphate ore for fertilizer. Been in various metal mining operations over the years. The money is good, but at this point I value stability over $$.
The miners here are by and large getting older - not many young people have mining as a career goal.
Yeah I went through the stability phase but 18months of that was enough, with stability comes far less $$$. Lots of young people want to get into it here especially in WA but most of them are useless and a danger to themselves and others. I'm a fifth generation mineworker and up until I was about 16 all I wanted to do was stay away from mining but now I can't think of anything else I would want to do, beside mining nothing pays anywhere near the money.
