Hey guys, I am doing some work on my mountain bike and a question popped into my mind. I am loooking at getting a new front derailleur, and not sure if there is a way to tell if my bike needs a top, or bottom swing front derailleur. I cant check the old one, because the bike didnt come with an old one! I am also a former bike tech, but unfortunatly, I never did get a straight answer when I asked this question.
may i ask what your talking about? Im a bike guy, mostly BMX types but i can work on them all. Down here we have different words for things so i am just wondering what you mean by "derailleur"

preppypyro, have you tried calling the manufacturer. They might be best suited to help you. Sorry I can't, my downhill rig don't have a front derailleur.

I think it means where the cable hooks to if it comes up from the bottom its a top swing if it comes from the top its a bottom swing hope this helps.what brand of bike and how many speeds is it?
The manufacturer of my frame arent much help because the frame is 3 years old and they dont make it anymore. Thanks for the definition of the derailleur, thats exactly what it is As for buying a new bike, no offence man but thats not a bright idea! Spend maybe 50 bucks on a derailleur for a 1000 ish dollar bike, or spend 200 bucks on a crappy walmart bike, I say spend the 50 bucks! I do appreciate the info though. I think I found out that a bottom swing derailleur is what I need. Just was hoping there was another bike pro out there that knew for sure
