I have a 1978 F600 U-haul. On the passenger side valve cover I found a sticker with 359 HD on it. I found out through this site that it is a FT engine. It has a Holley two barrel. I'm having trouble at the parts store in ordering a distributor with a pertronix ignitor. Can i get one for a 360 FE?
It has a four speed manual tranny and another lever to the right of it. Is that a hand brake or a two speed gearbox? I see no other manual braking system. Am I missing something or does it have a secondary brake that I just can't see?
And what should I set my red line on? 3200-3500
I'm using it to haul my relatives from New England to Tennessee. Is there anything I should get before the long haul? Besides some $350 tires......
Thx Jason in TN.
I'm not sure if the 359 uses the larger FT distributor or not. I think it would be best to just replace the points, cap, and rotor, then set the dwell. You should be able to get a pertronix kit for your existing distributor if you really want one. There are places that sell a bushing to let you use FE distributors in FT applications, but I'm not sure if it would arrive in time for your trip.
I cant help on the brake thing.
I'd set the redline at 3200. You probably wont gain anything above that if it has the FT heads, which I think it does.
If its uhauls truck I wouldn't invest in it. If you bought it then ok. Those size trucks I thought had governers on them. Fresh points should be just fine on a truck like that. If your worried enough to buy a Pertonix I would spend the extra money at a shop having them give your home tuneup a once over. Fresh fluids is a plus, and maybe some tools for the road..if you have my kinda luck..lol
