The ZF S-650/M6HD manual 6-speed tranny was available starting in '99 on the new body trucks, used behind the 7.3L PSD only. The old ZF 5-speed manual was available on the new 5.4L and V10 motors that year with a different bellhousing bolt pattern to fit the new motors and the 4R100 4-speed auto was available on both gas motors and the diesel. The 4R100 was replaced by the TorqShift 5R110 5-speed auto on the diesel motors in 2003 when the 6.0L PSD replaced the 7.3L, but the 4R100 continued to be used on the gas motors. Both the 7.3L and 6.0L diesels were available in 2003. No more 7.3L PSD after 2003. I'm not sure when the ZF 5-speed was phased out, but it appears to have been gone by 2003, as the 6-speed was available on all motors in 2003.
So the short answer is- the 6-speed can be found on the 7.3L diesel from '99 to 2003 and on the 6.0L diesel, 5.4L gas, and V10 gas motors from 2003 to present. You cannot use one from a V10 or 5.4L on a 7.3L PSD though, different bolt patterns
